CapturaTalk for Android

CapturaTalk is an OCR-to-Speech app for Android devices. It was developed by Iansyst Ltd who are a leading UK supplier of Assistive Technology.

CapturaTalk was designed to assist people with reading difficulties, to access information on the move. It does this by using the ‘ABBYY Mobile OCR Engine’ to recognise captured text and convert it for the text-to-speech engine to read aloud.

At £48.00 this app is a little pricey, but the app is full of features, including the ability to read aloud: text messages, websites, file management, and typed in text, with lots of different settings to customise the app to the user’s preference.

Before buying I would suggest you have a play with the 30 day trial version. I tested the trial version of CapturaTalk on my HTC Sensation which is running Android 4.0.3. I experienced a few issues with error messages, but ignoring them seemed to work as the app ran as advertised.

Read aloud

The procedure for capturing text to be read aloud is pretty straight forward, simply follow these instructions:

  1. Text-to-Speech – Go to the text-to-speech tab clicking on the icon will activate your camera.
  2. Text Capture – Position your android device over the text you want to be read aloud and capture an image. If you are happy with the image that has been taken proceed by pressing ‘Done’ button.
  3. OCR – The ABBYY OCR engine will now attempt to recognize the characters you capture when you took the photo of the text.
  4. Read aloud – When the OCR has completed you will have editable text, which can now be read aloud, or pasted into an email, text, etc.

You won’t find CapturaTalk on Google Play, you will have to download direct from their website. Because of this the installation isn’t exactly straight forward. I have included some step-by-step installation instructions below.

Before starting you will need to ensure that you have the following:

  1. An Android device with:
    • Camera
    • Internet Connection
  2. CapturaTalk for Android App (Trial) – Download here

Installation Instructions – CapturaTalk for Android

  1. The first thing you will need to do before downloading CapturaTalk is to modify your devices security options. Due to the source of this app not being in the Play Store, you will be presented with an “Install Blocked” message if you attempt to install it. To get around this security feature you will need to temporarily enable the installation of app from unknown sources:
    • Go to Settings -> Security
    • Scroll down the page until you reach the heading ‘DEVICE ADMINISTRATION’. Enable ‘Unknown sources’.

This will now allow the installation of apps from sources other than the Play Store.

  2. Now that you have enabled installation from ‘Unknown sources’ you can download the CapturaTalk free trial.
  3. The simplest way of downloading is to visit the CapturaTalk website (here) via you Android device.
  4. Once you’ve completed their online form with your name, email, and pressed submit you will be taken to their download page. Where you can initiate the download by clicking on “Download your install file here.”
  5. Your download will now automatically start.
  6. One completion of the download your Android device will automatically install the app. Just follow the on-screen instructions.
