Opera mini on Android phone

Opera released its beta 10.5 version of its Web browser for Android phones this week. It’s a nice addition to the Android market and worth a download, but whether it’s necessarily better than the browser that comes packaged with Android phones is up for debate.  It’s one advantage seems to be a home page grid of favorite websites. From Opera’s press release on Thursday:

Opera Mini, with more than 50 million users worldwide, enables Web browsing on almost any handset by compressing data by up to 90 percent before sending content to the phone, resulting in significantly improved page loading and speed. With a simple, easy-to-use interface, Opera Mini offers a desktop-like Web browsing experience on a mobile phone, with favorite features such as Speed Dial, tabbed browsing, password manager and bookmarks. With Opera Mini optimized for Android, more people will be able to get a PC-like browsing experience on their mobile handsets.

  1. I may end up installing this to see how it fares against Dolphin. I wasn’t very impressed with the default browser (on Android 1.5).

I wish Chrome was a default on the phone, and my hope is that with Chrome on the rumored Google tablet running on Android, we’ll get a small form factor version for the phones.
