Android apps are keeping pace with apps on iPhone. Apps on Android include most of the uber cool things we could do with the iPhone earlier. A new app, Rebtel takes this a step further by creating an app to place free calls over 3G networks. Surprisingly enough, Rebtel uses VOIP technology at the same time.
Rebtel has a technology to place VOIP calls over a 3G mobile network. This, unlike Skype is Wi-Fi only VOIP service is extremely handy and spreads over a wide area. Additionally, it is not limited to Wi-Fi network only.

Now, Google Voice and Skype both have a client for Android. So, what is different for Rebtel? Why should you opt for it?

Skype allows free Skype to Skype calls only on a very expensive Verizon network. Rebtel, on the other hand, allows cheap calls on any network. If both the ends have Rebtel installed, the call takes place free of charge. This is done by rerouting the calls through local numbers setup for that purpose.

Most VOIP providers have been huge successes at different places on different networks. This app from Rebtel proves that we are moving closer to a revolution in mobile networks where voice transmitted over a mobile network will finally take the form of data packets.
