The often tedious task of locating recently used apps on your Android device can get a lot easier — literally at the push of a button.
If your device is turned on and the screen unlocked, press and hold the home button for a couple of seconds to view a list of your six most recently used apps. Then, simply tap the icon that corresponds to the app you wish to enter. Going into standby mode won’t erase the list, but powering off completely will.

I use this all the time on my Hero. It is a little tedious to go to the home screen and hit on the app icon, and even then you don’t know whether or not the app has saved your state.
The long-press home button technique has saved me much time, especially when copying a URL from Dolphin and pasting it into another app.
